…rather than searching for the one and only thing that will help them understand why they were put on this earth, or a hunt down a singular way to make an everlasting and profound difference to the larger society, we sometimes forget to seek out answers to life’s meaning that might be discovered down several different avenues closer to home. — Suzanne St. John Smith Psy.D.
What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word “empowerment”? Do you associate this word with strength, power, responsibility and a goal? To be empowered means to have the capacity to reach your potential. It refers to the act of becoming powerful and making things happen. At this point, we have to emphasize the fact that personal empowerment is all about you. To learn more about it, be sure to read this article up to the end.
There are several dimensions of personal empowerment. Here is the list:
The skills you possess are the enabling factor that allows you to achieve goals and meet objectives. Without these, you will not be able to materialize the things that you have in mind. Because of this, it is crucial for you to continue training and learning new lessons to enhance your skills. Become more educated and apply what you have learned.
This refers to your ability to understand your environment and how well you respond to different situations. So that you can become personally empowered, it is essential for you to determine your strengths and weaknesses. Take note that being aware of what makes you strong is useless if you have no idea about the things that make you weak. There has to be a balance in everything.
What you need to do is to determine where you are good at so you can improve in that aspect. On the other hand, once you detect your weaknesses, make sure to keep yourself away from it.
Having too high self-esteem that doesn’t accurately reflect reality isn’t healthy. It’s inflated and common among people with narcissistic tendencies. — Darlene Lancer, JD, MFT
What you believe in also plays an essential role in your empowerment. This involves the set of beliefs as well as opinions about particular matters. Values can be affected by many factors, one of which is your upbringing. For example, if you grow up in a family who is a firm believer in the existence of an Omnipotent God, then you are less likely to become an agnostic or an atheist.
A big part of personal empowerment is setting up your goals. Having clear goals is an indication that you have a bigger plan for your life. It means that you want something good to happen in the future. The beautiful thing about doing this is that it allows you to plan the direction of your life. Be sure to make realistic plans. Otherwise, you will only end up being frustrated especially when these goals will not be materialized.
Being fully informed or acquiring knowledge is essential for your personal empowerment. Keep in mind that in the absence of information, there is a chance that you may lose track of where to go or what to do. Without knowledge, your options become slimmer. For this reason, it is necessary that you make an effort in accessing information on a regular basis. Keep yourself updated with material and relevant information.
There is a myriad of tools, techniques, systems and such to help us manage our life. But these don’t do us any good if we don’t create the time to learn about them, implement them, integrate them, conquer them. — Emma K. Viglucci LMFT
Give yourself a chance to be personally empowered. Just focus on what you want to accomplish. Improve on the different aspects mentioned above.
